Classic Mexican Horror Stories: El Cucuy

El Cucuy

It is said that El Cucuy lives in Mexico.

The legend of el Cucuy originated in Spain. The word "cucuy" comes from the word "coco," which means coconut. At the same time, "coco" also means "head" or "skull." El Cucuy’s head resembles a coconut because his head also has a brown hairy head.

The Cucuy is a small creature with misshapen and hairy.

He also has large bat-like ears, red eyes that glow in the dark, and a set of large, razor-sharp teeth.

However, el Cucuy is a shapeshifter and transforms into a hideous faceless shadow.

The legend of El Cucuy tells about his evil and nefarious acts.

The legend is that El Cucuy attacks and abducts rowdy children.

El Cucuy hides underneath children’s beds or inside their closets.

He waits in the darkness until the children fall asleep or deep into the night.

As soon as the child falls asleep, El Cucuy quickly snatches them and takes them away, never to be seen again.

When El Cucuy takes the appearance of the faceless shadow, he is able to enter the children's room quietly and hide in the shadows.

He silently waits in the shadows for a long time, waiting for his chance to show himself and take away the child.

El Cucuy would then take the child to his lair, inside a mountain, and slowly eat the child.

The parents and caretakers of children use the fear of el Cucuy to scare the children into obedience and good behavior.

The main story, that parents tell their kids, is about a rowdy boy who wouldn't listen to his parents.

The story goes that one evening, the boy was rowdy and throwing a tantrum.

He didn’t want to eat his mom’s cooking or do his chores.

The mother warned the child that if he didn’t behave and do his chores, el Cucuy would show up at night and take him away.

The boy didn’t believe her, so he stuck out his tongue at her.

The mother got frustrated with the boy, so she sent him to his room.

After stomping and yelling for a time, the boy finally fell asleep.

Once he fell asleep, el Cucuy immediately came out from the shadows and pulled the boy’s feet.

The boy struggled and shouted for his mom.

His parents woke up and ran to help the boy.

         However, they were too late.

El Cucuy had already grabbed the child.

The parents saw El Cucuy jumping out the window carrying the boy.

El Cucuy then took the boy into his home in a cave and slowly ate him.
