Classic Mexican Horror Stories: El Charro Negro

Classic Mexican Horror Stories: El Charro Negro

The next horror story I love to hear and read about is EL Charro Negro (black horseman). El Charro Negro is a great reminder of what could happen to us when we allow greed into our lives.

El Charro Negro wasn’t just a ghost that roamed the world. He once was a child, who came from a modest family. His family did not spoil him but did provide a stable life. Unfortunately, that was not enough for him. He wanted the finest things in life. He wanted nice clothes, money, and fame. He envied rich people because he wanted the nice clothes, horses, and belongings that they had. As he grew older, he saved up his money to buy nice clothes.  It was never enough for him. He wanted more. He wanted the best.

One night, he was going home after going to a party. He was angry and drunk. He was tired of working. El Charro just wanted to be rich and famous. He felt he needed all the riches in the world, and it was not fair that he did not have what he wanted. As he was walking, a man approached El Charro. He was intrigued by the man because he was dressed in the finest tuxedo. They started to talk, and El Charro let the man know of his frustrations. The elegant man started to show off his gold. El Charro was mesmerized. His eyes were wide. Then the elegant man showed off a beautiful black horse. El Charro was envious. He wanted gold, horses, and fine clothes and would do anything. The elegant man knew this and said, “I could give it to you.” El Charro was confused and asked him, “How?” The elegant man said, “I can give this to you for your soul.” El Charro didn’t care about his soul. He just wanted power and money. He agreed to give his soul. The elegant man gave him the gold, and horse, and transformed his regular suit into the finest tuxedo money can buy. El Charro was happy and finally felt like he had everything he ever wanted.

He was able to buy a beautiful big house, and the best clothes, and brought the best saddle for the horse. He spent his days at bars to gamble, drink, and show off his wealth. He was the life of every party. Everyone loved to party and be around him because he bought all the drinks, always gambled, and gave expensive gifts. Many years after living the life he dreamt of, he suddenly realized how empty he felt. He started to cry because he had no one. He had all the riches in the world but was not happy.

One day, the elegant man came to him. El Charro was mortified. The elegant man looked the same. Just then, he remembered the promise he made with the elegant man. That’s when he realized, he made a deal with the devil, and his soul was going to get collected. He was scared and decided to hide and get away. He got rid of most of his belongings and packed what he needed to move away. As he was making his way, the elegant man met him. He called him a coward and for that, he cursed his soul. El Charro’s skin began to disappear. He transformed into a skeleton with a black charro suit. His black horse’s eyes turned red. The elegant man said, “Your soul cannot rest unless someone trades with you.” Now people see him roaming in rural locations all around Mexico. At night, his bones shine brightly, his suit is darker than night, and his suit’s silver shines in the dark sky. His goal now is to find someone as greedy and selfish as he once was, to take his place but for now, he will roam.

El Charro Negro is usually seen outside of the cities at night. He appears to people who travel alone at night. El Charro Negro shows off his beautiful shiny silver and gold. His horse’s shiny black fur shines brightly easily catching a person’s attention. Traveling alone can raise your chances of meeting El Charro Negro and seeing his treasures. Just make sure not to trade your soul for gold.

My dad once met El Charro Negro when he was a young kid. When he was small, he had the chore of picking some sort of plant to feed the animals in my grandpa’s rancho. One day, he was home and heard his dad coming and he quickly remembered, he did not do his chores. He knew he was going to be in a lot of trouble. My grandpa got mad at him and told him to get them the plants. It was already getting dark, but my grandpa did not care. My dad needed to do his chores. So, he walked fast because the moon was not out that night. My dad had to walk far and when he reached the crossroads, he saw a man in a black charro suit with shiny silver on his sides. His horse had silver on his saddle. My dad stopped and looked at him. Part of him wanted to see who it was and find out why he was out there at that time. My dad got a bad feeling, so he slowly started to start his way again. He kept walking and tried not to look at him since it seemed like he was being followed by him. He decided to take another quick peak, and he saw no one. That scared him and he ran, gathered the plants, and ran back home.
